What is the role of the CL Facilitator?

In many CL Groups, especially those that are just beginning, the roles of the Leader and Facilitator are performed by the same person. As the group grows and matures, it becomes necessary to assign each role to a different person.

The Facilitator is the person responsible for leading a CL Group meeting. This person prepares for the meeting or mission, does the necessary research, leads the discussion, encourages participation, and collects feedback from the members. The Facilitator role can be shared among several within the group if the interest is high. There should be only one Group Leader, however, for each CL Group.

What are some important traits and habits of an effective CL Group Leader?

  • Desires to be holy
  • Loves the Church and is not interested in tearing it down
  • Earns the respect of others through service and hard work
  • Comfortable with delegating responsibilities
  • Can see the “big picture” and knows where the group should be going
  • Gentle when presenting thorny issues
  • Can make tough decisions
  • Ready to forsake popularity for truth
  • Compassionate, good sense of humor
  • Does not gossip and is trusted by peers
  • Knows (or is actively learning) his/her faith
  • Skillfully handles challenging personalities

What is the role of the Group Leader?

As the CL Group Leader, you are the organization head of the group. You communicate with the CL Coordinator, send out emails, appoint the Core Team, work with priests and other religious, schedule the meetings, and accomplish other administrative tasks.

Your goal should be of offer good leadership and an organized, well-run program. You should also plan on having a back-up Group Leader, someone to leader the group when you are absent. Also, if you are nearing graduation or transfer, it is prudent to have your back up CL Group Leader begin to spend time in the role so they are ready to take over upon your departure.
